What to Do When You Find a Water Leak
A calm, safe first-response sequence for a visible leak before help arrives.
Stay calm and safe
If you find a visible leak, the first priority is safety. Don't enter a flooded area that has electrical equipment, and don't touch energized appliances near standing water.
A short, calm sequence
- If you can safely reach your main water shutoff, turn off the water.
- Move belongings away from the water if it's safe.
- Take a photo if it's safe to do so.
